- Epica™ HDVI Case Study: Bacterial Otitis Media and Externa
By Dr. Robert O'Brien, DVM, DACVR Patient: 4-year-old male neutered domestic short haired cat that presented with a history of chronic ear scratching. Recently the patient developed a head tilt. On physical examination the patient had soft tissue swelling to the left base of the skull, head tilt, and nystagmus. The left ear canal was occluded at the junction of the horizontal and vertical ear canal regions. Imaging Protocol: A survey and post-i.v. contrast CT was performed of the head. The contrast dose was 2ml ml/lb BW of Iohexol (300mg/ml iodine) contrast media; given as a bolus prior to image initiation. Download Full Review.
- Epica™ HDVI Case Study: Meningioma
By Dr. Robert O'Brien, DVM, DACVR Patient: 9 year old female spayed Border Collie that presented to a surgical specialty practice with a 6 month history of left sided exophthalmos. Image Protocol: A survey and post-i.v. contrast CT was performed of the head. The contrast dose was 2ml ml/lb BW of Iohexol (300mg/ml iodine) contrast media; half given as a bolus prior to image initiation and the remainder as a slow 15 sec bolus during the initial part of the 30 sec acquisition time.mediately prior to image initiation. Download Full Study.
- Epica™ HDVI Case Study: OSA with Pathological Fracture and Hemothorax
By Dr. Robert O'Brien, DVM, DACVR Patient: 6-year-old male neutered large mixed breed dog that presented with a history of acute lethargy and labored breathing. Thoracocentesis revealed hemothorax. Image protocol: The patient was imaged in dorsal recumbency. A survey and post-i.v. contrast CT was performed of the chest. The contrast dose was 1 ml/lb BW of Iohexol (300mg/ml iodine) contrast media; given as a bolus prior to image initiation. Imaging Protocol: Primary rib neoplasia (OSA, CSA, atypical myeloma, metastatic lesion or osteomyelitis) with pathological fracture and secondary hemothorax. Download full review here.
- Destructive Rhinitis - Feline Patient. See Epica's HDVI CT Findings & Reports
A feline patient presented with a palpable mass on the skull. Epica's Vimago™ HDVI found the underlying problem, severe rhinitis. Patient presented with right-side-irregular palpable mass, development of upper respiratory symptoms including excess mucus production, sneezing and gagging. Patient is now anorexic and non-responsive to antibiotic trials previously pursued. The treating veterinarian utilized Vimago™ to provide a contrast scan of the skull and acquired a high resolution, volumetric exam of the mass. Please click here to review the case video of the week.
- First Ever Common Tenrec to Undergo Whole Body BriteVu Contrast Perfusion, Using Vimago™
Common tenrec (Tenrec ecaudatus) vascular anatomy as seen with BriteVu. The study was conducted at University of Nevada Las Vegas, and led by Dr. Frank van Breukelen. Tenrecs are unusual mammals with unique physiology and anatomy and originate primarily from Madagascar. Dr. Frank van Breukelen and his team at UNLV are the leading researchers studying these strange animals. This tenrec is the first ever to undergo a whole body BriteVu contrast perfusion. Further, this project was a collaborative effort between UNLV, Touch of Life Technologies and Scarlet Imaging. The resulting digital data helps researchers find to new discoveries relative to anatomy and is fast becoming a means to study animals of just about any species. The tenrec was scanned on an Epica Vimago CT scanner at 200µm. - Baby Hippo Imaged on Vimago™ by Mobile Pet Imaging
Aubergine, the juvenile male pygmy hippopotamus that was born on August 4th, underwent a series of exams on Wednesday in an effort to find the cause of chronic nasal discharge that he has been experiencing. The exams included a CT scan, a rhinoscopy, and a bronchoscopy. The Zoo Miami Animal Health team led by Chief Veterinarian Dr. Gwen Myers and assisted by Associate Veterinarians Dr. Gaby Flacke, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, and Dr. Marisa Bezjian, coordinated and supervised the procedures. Dr. Xavier Meaux and veterinary technician Robert Zapata of Mobile Pet Imaging performed the CT Scan and Dr. Woody Hayes, using valuable endoscopy equipment generously loaned by the Storz Company, performed the rhinoscopy and bronchoscopy exams in an effort to discover what may be causing the young hippo’s chronic discharge. Blood samples were also collected. Initial results are still inconclusive and the veterinary team will be meeting within the next several days to discuss in depth some theories as to why Aubergine is exhibiting these symptoms and to determine what, if any treatment, will be necessary. In the meantime, he appears to have fully recovered from the procedures and is back on exhibit with his mother. Other than the nasal discharge, he is eating well and demonstrating normal behavior.
